Candle Burning Tips
ü
Never leave a burning candle unattended or within reach of children & pets
ü
Do not burn near flammable objects such as curtains, lampshades or blankets
ü
Burn only on heat resistant surfaces- they can become hot enough to damage furniture
ü
Do not move a burning candle, or place in a draft
ü
Keep candle free of foreign material- matches, wick clippings, etc.
ü
Keep wick trimmed to 1/4 inch (about the thickness of a pencil) to avoid excessive smoking
ü
Do not burn if container is cracked
ü
Discontinue burning when less than 1/2 inch of wax remains.
When burning a candle for the first time, it is important to give it a "memory burn". You should burn the candle for 1 hour for each inch of its diameter. Example: a candle 3" in diameter should be burned for three hours to establish its "memory". This allows your jar candle to establish a full melt pool increasing the scent throw. If a candle isn't given a proper memory burn (meaning if your candle is burned for a short period of time), it will "Core Burn" down the center and a good scent throw cannot be achieved. Also, you'll be left with wax at the bottom and at the side.
Drafts or extreme room temperatures can cause uneven burn. The wick must always be kept centered. If a wick should ever move to one side while burning, extinguish candle, and reposition wick to the center. Also make sure your wick is centered each time you extinguish your candle. If your wick smokes, the flame is too high or a mushroom forms on your wick, it is telling you to trim the wick. Wick trimmers or nail clippers work well when trimming your wick.
To properly extinguish a candle use a wick dipper. Using a wick dipper insures
no smoking after the flame is extinguished, no wax splatter & coats the wick with wax so it burns cleaner & lasts longer with next lighting.
In the event that you cut the wick too short, don't panic, in most cases the candle will "right itself" after burning for a little while. If the candle tunnels as a result, simply scoop out the wax that did not melt & create a level surface again. If you are unable to light the candle because the wick is too short, gently dig around the wick with a wick dipper or butter knife. Light the candle & tilt the jar side to side allowing the wax to roll away from the wick. Allow the flame to become high enough to get the candle burning nicely & be sure to let the candle burn evenly across the top before extinguishing the candle.
Votive Burning Tips
All votive candles will liquefy and burn completely away when burned in a proper tight fitting votive cup. All votive candles should be burned in a proper votive cup. All the candle burning tips above also apply to votive burning.
Enjoy your new hodge podge votive!!!
Tart Melting Tips
Place your soy wax tart in a well-ventilated electric tart burner or one that uses a tea light candle. Never heat on a stove or add water. Do not move while candle is burning or wax is hot. To remove wax from your burner, simply let the wax harden, place removable pot into the freezer & once the wax has cooled & shrank it will easily pop right out.
Drop in another hodge podge tart & enjoy!!!

Aged Grubby Grungy Hang Tags
Supplies:
Any size shipping tags (found at your local Office Supply Store)
Hot water
instant coffee or instant tea
imitation vanilla
plastic container w/lid(pick one that the tag will lie flat in)
cookie sheet
Extra Supplies:
cinnamon, candle scent, plastic spray bottle, rubber stamps, sharpie(or any waterproof and non-bleeding ink pin), vintage pictures, glass glitter, mica flakes, glamour dust, modge podge, clear acrylic sealer, ripped homespun, raffia, jute rope.
First you will need to mix your coffee or tea stain. For darker tags, use the coffee stain. For lighter tags, use the tea stain. In the plastic container mix 1 cup hot water, 1/2 cup of instant coffee or instant tea, and 1 tablespoon of imitation vanilla. Dip the tags into the mixture and then place flat onto a cookie sheet. I use an old chip paint brush to help push the tags into the mixture and to brush the mixture onto the strings. Bake the tags in your oven at 200 until dry. If they are not dark enough, dip into the mixture and bake again. Repeat this process until you have achieved the look you want. For a more grubbier look, sprinkle the stained tags with cinnamon before you bake in the oven. When you are finished with the mixture, cover and store in your refrigerator. When you're ready to stain again, just pop the mixture into the microwave to heat.
Now, the fun part!!! Once the staind tags are completely dry, use your other supplies to decorate. You may wish to use stamps and markers to add a special message or popular saying. Add vintage pictures, glass glitter or mica flakes with modge podge. To eliminate tackiness, apply clear acrylic sealer over the dried modge podge. If you're not too crazy about the string, try replacing it with ripped grubby homespun(grubby same as tags), raffia or jute rope.
Once you have finished decorating the tags, try adding a light scent to them. To do this, I add about 1oz of candle scent to about 3oz of distilled water into a spray bottle. I then spritz the back of the tags and let dry completely.
These tags are great to add to your gifts or crafts for a unique and special look. Plus, you can say "I made that!!!" Thanks for stopping by and have fun crafting!!! Becky

Rusting ~For Your Primitive Creations~
Ingredients:
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup bleach
1 teaspoon salt
Supplies:
Any item you would like to rust.
example: safety pins, jungle bells, nails or tin cans
(I have found that the cheaper the brand, the better it rusts!!!)
cookie sheet
quart jar
Combine ingredients together in an old container. I've found that a quart jar or old metal pot works nice.
Add the items that you would like to rust and cover loosely. Place in a safe spot and let set for 2 to 3 days. You may want to do this outside because the fumes are very strong! Please keep away from children & pets.
Remove the items from the mixture and place them on an old cookie sheet. Place the tray in the sun and the items will begin to rust as they dry. Be sure to move the items around so that they will dry evenly.
If the items are not as rusty as you would like, repeat the process. I have tried leaving the safety pins in the mixture longer than 3 days but they corroded & fell apart. I put all the items that I have rusted into a metal wire basket & leave outside until I am ready to use them so that they can get extra rusty!!!
Good luck & have fun crafting!!! Becky
